What Corpus Christi Monopoly Should Look Like

Do you remember that game you played as a kid where it took all day until someone got really annoyed with it and flipped the board over? Yeah, it was called Monopoly. The Corpus version is finally out or back or rebooted or reissued? Walmart in Flour Bluff had an “unofficial” version back in 2018 and sold out pretty quickly. It was definitely generic and had some named landmarks but overall you can tell someone quickly googled Corpus and just threw out some places to put on the board. Now here we are in 2022 and after the announcement of its creation back in January the “official” version is finally out. This version had a handpicked panel of Corpus influencers to help decide what went on the board and well somehow some things that didn’t need to be on there still made it on there. The new version is definitely cleaner looking than the 2018 copy and doesn’t have that generic feel to it but we knew that it would probably be more commercially appealing than accurately local. So I’m going to go through some thoughts we put together for this back in January when it was announced. Oh yeah, we’ve been waiting for this too! We didn’t do the whole board but we definitely had some suggestions.

Go To Jail = Go To Robstown

I want to start off with the most notable game characteristic that there is. Go to jail, is probably the most used phrase in and out of the game. We reference not only the phrase “Go to jail” but also the card that tells you, do not pass go, and do not collect $200. So obviously this one had to be bad, and well I’m not trying to sound rude here but it has to be Robstown right? The “non-official” game came up with traffic jam and the new “official” version still has go to jail. It’s understandable that they kept go to jail, no way are they going to offend anyone. But again if we’re being honest it’s Robstown… right?

Mediterranean Ave = La Armada

Baltic Ave = Westside

The new version stuck mostly to landmarks, which is also understandable because they want to show us all shiny and gentrified. I however grew up where you start off in Monopoly. So no way am I skipping a chance to add a world that I grew up around. This also makes it a bit more realistic, we start off with almost nothing but soon maybe we’re buying Boardwalk. You did a full-on Jeffersons and that’s something you should be proud of, not shy away from. I know both of these are areas not necessarily streets but I didn’t want to single out all of Ayers.
